Jig Fishing 101
by Captain Bert Deener
My love affair
with lead-headed, rubber or hair-skirted
lures known as jigs started in 1987 when
my girlfriend at the time gave me a jig-head
mold for Christmas. Teresa is now my wife,
and hundreds of thousands of jigs later there
rae times when she wishes she had not given
me that original mold due to the hours I
spend putting these bass-catching morsels
together. Nonetheless, over the last two
decades I have seen jigs move from an oddity
lure with a cult following to a standard
lure that few anglers are without.

Shallow Crankin'
by Captain Bert Deener
Few
presentations trigger bass strikes more effectively
in shallow water than quickly retrieving a rod
thumping, wide wobbling, and shallow diving
crankbait. The lure looks so inviting that no active
bass can resist its appeal. Patrick Pierce, B.A.S.S.
and FLW touring pro from Jacksonville, Florida, uses
shallow cranks as one of his primary tools to bring
quality sacks to the scales, especially during the
fall.

Tips – Freshwater
Dock Fishing During the Dog Days
by Captain Bert Deener
During
the heat of the summer, it is often difficult to
find bass and even harder to get them to bite. As
the mercury climbs into the upper 90's, the bass are
looking for a retreat just as we are. In weed
infested lakes, the weeds often become a sanctuary.
In other lakes, some suspend and become almost
impossible to catch, but may seek the shady lair
offered by boat docks. Patrick Pierce fishes both
the BASS and FLW professional circuits and offers
the following advice to pull some hawgs out from
their shady haunts.

Deep Water Crank-Baiting for Bass
by Captain Bert Deener
As the
mercury climbs and our lakes approach the
temperature of bath water, most anglers' success
rate declines because many bass move away from the
bank and head for deeper water. Patrick Pierce of
Jacksonville, Florida fishes both the B.A.S.S. and
the FLW pro trails
and loves fishing deep-diving crankbaits during the
"dog-days."

Tips – Rigging
The Shaky Head Rig for Bass
by Captain Bert Deener
Professional angler, Patrick Pierce, from
Jacksonville, Florida fishes both the Southern Tour
with B.A.S.S. and the Stren Series with FLW, so he
logs significant time on the water each year.
Versatility is the key to wins, and one of his go-to
presentations when the bas get lockjaw is a shaky
head presentation. This is a new twist with a simple
jig head and a small, finesse-style plastic worm.
